What is Counselling?

  • A Safe Space: A confidential, non-judgmental environment where you can say the things you can’t say anywhere else.

  • Self-Discovery: A process of identifying the "why" behind your actions, feelings, and patterns.

  • Skill Building: A place to learn practical tools for managing anxiety, setting boundaries, or communicating with a partner.

  • Objectivity: Unlike a friend, a counsellor has no "stake" in your life, allowing them to see your situation with total neutrality.

What Counselling is not...

  • Advice-Giving: A common misconception is that a counsellor tells you what to do (e.g., "You should leave him"). Instead, they help you find the clarity to make your own decisions.

  • Friendship: While a counsellor is warm and empathetic, the relationship is professional. This boundary is what makes the therapy effective.

  • A "Quick Fix": It is a process. While you might feel better after one session (venting helps!), true change usually takes time and practice.

How it works

Most sessions last for 60 minutes. As a counsellor, I use the Person-Centred Approach which sees the person as the expert in their own life with the capacity to make their own decisions.

In addition, I use a combination of counselling techniques such as:

  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) - Changing negative thought patterns to lead to a positive change in behaviour.

  • Solution-Focused Therapy - Focusing on immediate goals and the future, rather than the past.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy - Learning to observe your thoughts like "clouds passing in the sky" and committing to actions that align with your personal values, regardless of how you’re feeling in that moment.

  • Mindfulness Techniques - breath awareness and meditation

Why do people go to Counselling?

You don't need to be in a "crisis" to go to counselling. People use it for:

  • Navigating big life transitions (new baby, job change, grief).

  • Breaking repetitive patterns in dating or relationships.

  • Managing "background" feelings of stress or low self-esteem.

  • Simply wanting to understand themselves better.
